Travel Grants

CLOSED April 15, 2011

The SER2011 Travel Grants Program is designed to afford students, indigenous peoples and community leaders with limited financial resources the opportunity to participate in this dynamic and formative event. It is also intended to broaden the geographic and cultural representation of delegates at the conference by enabling participation from developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Who Should Apply

The SER2011 Conference Organizing Committee encourages applications from students, indigenous peoples and community leaders whose financial circumstances would not allow them to participate in the conference otherwise. Although applicants from diverse social and professional backgrounds will be eligible for funding support (e.g. earth sciences, landscape architecture, ecological engineering, natural resource management, public policy, economics, community-based activities, indigenous cultures), those whose work most closely relates to the conference theme and main topic areas will be given preference.

Selection Criteria

The number of travel grants awarded under this program will be based on the amount of money raised through sponsorships. In order to offer assistance to as many participants as possible, full funding will not be provided. Thus, applicants are strongly encouraged to pursue other sources of funding to support their attendance at the conference. Individuals will be selected, and funding amounts awarded, based on the following criteria:

  • Financial need
  • Distance from point of origin to the conference site
  • Availability of other sources of funding/support
  • Participation in the conference (e.g. speaker, presenter, poster)
  • Relevance of the applicant’s work to the themes and topic areas of SER2011 (click here for list)
  • Membership status and involvement in SER

How to Apply

PDF application forms must be completed and submitted electronically before April 15, 2011. Applicants will be notified of their selection status by May 1, 2011. Upon being selected to receive a travel grant, delegates will be contacted by a representative from SER with more information about the disbursement of funds and the documentation they will be required to provide.
